Character Sketch, Mary

This is Lesson Two demonstration supplement to the instruction design component of "Developing Personas and Scenarios." — Character Analysis

(Transcribed from my journal. Lesson Two demonstration.)

My name is Mary, I’m 28 years old and ever since I graduated with my BSC in Kinesiology, I’ve been working as an assistant to the Kevin Smith, the owner of the Calgary Furies baseball team. I don’t much like Kevin but I like my job and one of my main duties is setting up SobaPro, the mechanical baseball pitching machine so the players can get their daily batting practice. Most days I wear designer track suits to work. J Lo is my current favourite. At lunch hours I usually go for a run with Rick, a really nice guy who plays catcher for the Furies.
It’s spring which means training is in full swing for the guys, It’s 2003, it’s 10:30 in the morning and we’re in Calgary, Canada. I’m out on the ballfield and surroundng me are a couple of the players, including Rick, and Kevin, the owner. There’s also a fair bit of equipment around but only one machine, SobaPro, who is already out on the pitchers mound and is really like one of the guys. I like SobaPro a lot and am pretty good at using it but I always let Kevin or Rick look after things like upgrades or if anything goes wrong.
When I first get here in the morning, I ensure there are enough balls in the hold and then wheel it out to the mound. Then I make sure the battery pack is in place, punch in the battery level reading, then set the coordinates, choose a program based on the coach’s instructions; either curve balls, fast balls, spin balls, or random, Then I set the timer to ensure that the date and time is set right, call batter up, press the play button, and then stand back and watch.
My daily objective is to make sure every player is given the exact program they need to improve their game. My longterm goal is the same as everyone else on the team, to win the pennant and I feel I can do my part by making sure SobaPro runs right.
My main obstacle right now is that Kevin has decided to rent SobaPro out so now there are three kinds of balls to install, baseballs, tennis balls, and golf balls. Kevin installed some new operating system too which is okay, I learn fast, but I just hope it doesn’t interfere with my job. I’ll need some extra training too. I don’t think SobaPro minds the extra balls because it’s as easy as always to roll around. However, it’s making a funny whirring noise now – maybe in its hard drive.
Just before I bicycled to work today I cleaned my apartment because my mom is coming over tonight. She was always a fanatic about spring cleaning. I know she’s proud of me because it’s been a year since I paid off my student loans and I’m saving for a trip to Hawaii next year. When work is over, I hope Rick will want to come over to meet my mom.
